On March 27th and 28th, ISSessions (our Information Systems Security club) put on a phenomenal Capture the Flag (CTF) contest where over 200 students came together to compete in cybersecurity challenges and participate in skills workshops.

With Industry support and/or sponsorship from Trend Micro, Bell, Deloitte, Security Compass, Vontel and the Sheridan Student Union, the 2021 CTF contest brought together students form 12 Ontario Colleges and Universities. Outside of Sheridan, students from Seneca, Fleming, Ontario Tech University, Mohawk, Algonquin, York University, University of Windsor, Ryerson University, University of Toronto, Brock University and Western University competed for the win.

A big congratulations to the first place team, SnackOverflow, from Sheridan, and the 2nd and 3rd place teams, Bits Please from Sheridan and Eternal Pizza from Seneca for their impressive success during the competition. TheCTF MVP title went out to player SK, who managed to solve 47 out of 111 challenges.

The challenge development team (consisted of Sheridan cybersecurity alumni and contest sponsors, designed over 111 challenges in categories like network traffic analysis, cryptography, forensics, data analysis, system administration, threat hunting, steganography, web application security, trivia, reverse engineering and programming. Some challenges were even supported by skills workshops run by the sponsors which included topics like N-day vulnerability research, IoT hacking and network traffic analysis.

A big thank you to contest organizers and volunteers for their tireless efforts in pulling together this event. Thanks to ISSessions Executive TeamKurt Kosubek, Louai Abboud, James Paugh, Yusef Islaih, Cem Celen and Nashad Hakim for their organization and planning prowess. And to the virtual on-site mentors who helped support the teams during the event by offering hints, guidance and technical support, appreciation goes to Yatin Marwah, Brandon West, Keifer Wiseman, Clinton Huynh, Owen Cummings, Johnathan Wong and Steffi Marcos.

Another successful CTF under the ISSessions belt, and a wrap for the club’s 2020-2021 season.
